Image Annotation: The remnant of an amelanotic spindle and epithelioid cell tumor from a Tyr-rtTA tetOp-RasV12G Ink4a-/- mouse that had been fed doxycycline and then withdrawn from doxycycline for a period of 12 days. Grossly, the tumor has regressed completely at this point, but this image shows an altered dermis with scattered spindle cells with small amounts of cytoplasm separated by edematous stroma. The mechanism of Ras-dependent tumor regression is this model is incompletely understood, but involves a combination of tumor cell apoptosis, a decreased mitotic rate, and a decrease in cell size (volume).
