Image Annotation: Malignant spindle cell neoplasm arising in a C3H mouse treated with solar simulated ultraviolet radiation (see also skin_47). The smooth edge of the hyperplastic, atypical squamous epithelium is occasionally interrupted by spindled keratinocytes that appear to be invading into the adjacent stroma and have a similar cytologic appearance to the spindle cells that compose the tumor. The pathology panel felt that this malignant spindle cell tumor was likely to be a spindle cell variant of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. This pattern of origin from the overlying squamous epithelium is often seen in human and mouse spindle cell carcinomas.
Staining Method: Hematoxylin and Eosin Staining Method
Diagnosis: Spindle-cell Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Murine Skin
