Image Annotation: Ear section from a C57BL/6 transgenic mouse expressing a non-diffusible form of the kit ligand (stem cell factor) in the basal epithelium. A Masson-Fontana stain is shown in which melanin containing areas are stained black. Melanin is present in nearly every cell at the dermal/epidermal junction (mostly keratinocytes), several suprabasal keratinocytes, and within dermal melanocytes. These transgenic mice were more darkly pigmented than non-transgenic littermates, particularly in regions of low hair density, such as the foot pads.
