MC02-0533.pff image submitted by Robert Cardiff

Image Name: MC02-0533.pff

Image Annotation: There is a densely cellular closely arranged neoplastic cell population that effaces the normal pulmonary architecture. The neoplastic population is arranged in a solid pattern with poorly defined nests and streams. The neoplastic cells are small to medium size and round with scant cytoplasm, finely granular chromatin and small nucleoli. The neoplastic cells are supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma. Adjacent compressed alveolar spaces contain small aggregates of neoplastic cells and swollen macrophages. Small bronchioles are lined by prominent hyperplastic robust epithelium and the lumen contain fibrin mixed with small neoplastic aggregates. There are occasional aggregates that resemble blood vessels filled with neoplastic cells and mixed with erythrocytes. There are small areas of necrosis scattered throughout the tumor. According to immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells contain variable amounts of synaptophysin and NSE, but not CD3 and CD45R antigens.
