Papillary adenocarcinoma.
There is a solid tumor mass in the right caudal lobe adjacent to a large eosinophilic consolidated area in the right caudal and middle lobes. The remaining portions of the lungs are normal. Papillary area in center and more anaplastic solid area on right side. Portion of lung mass showing a papillary area and more solid area on upper right corner. The solid area also has some vacuolated tumor cells. Papillary-tubular area. Note gland formation and some vacuolated tumor cells. Macrophage pneumonia in the lobe adjacent to the tumor mass. The macrophage cytoplasm is striated and may contain needle-like crystals, which may also be observed extracellularly. The lesion is a common response to lung tumors in mice. The cause of the lesion is not known but has been reported as macrophages accumulating ym1 protein. (Ward et al, AJP 158:323, 2001; Guo et al, JBC 275:8032, 2000). They may be responding to proteins in the tumors cells. The perivascular lymphocytes are also common response to mouse lung tumors, probably to tumor antigens. Intrabronchiolar growth by a papillary adenocarcinoma. Tumor cells line papillary stalks and have vesicular nuclei with prominent multiple nucleoli. Some cells have vacuoles.
